Application Security: Protect Your Flank

Thursday
Presentation

With the growing sophistication of network level security technologies, Web applications have emerged as the Achilles heel of Internet facing systems. Today, Web servers run applications that process financial transactions, credit card numbers, confidential records, and user identities. However, these applications are so large and complex that they invariably contain unknown vulnerabilities, or known vulnerabilities that are impossible or unfeasible to fix. Most troubling of all, these applications are completely vulnerable to attacks that flow undetected through Port 80 (and 443 for Secure Sockets Layer (SSL)) on network firewalls. This presentation will discuss Web application security techniques that can be used to analyze application traffic and how effective these are at spotting trouble in the Port 80 and 443 data streams.
