Modeling and Architecture Considerations for Systems of Systems

Wednesday
Presentation

Each system in a Systems of Systems (SOS) situation has an architecture of its own. The SOS will in turn have a higher-level architecture that incorporates the “immutables” from the various systems involved in that SOS. These immutables are not merely the SOS interfaces, but also include emergent behaviors — some of which may be unpredictable and surprising. Some emergent behaviors may be beneficial while others may be detrimental. How do you model the architecture for this situation? It involves new paradigms, novel ways of thinking, upgraded tools and techniques, and different skills and abilities. Are the new architecture frameworks helpful in this situation? If not, what else can be done? This presentation will show how these issues have been addressed in several large SOS situations such as the enterprise architecture for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the Capability Integration Framework for the Air Force Space Command.
