Cross-Domain Security in Net Centric Architectures

Thursday
Presentation

The established mandate of the Net Centric architecture is to provide a composeable framework where data sources and applications are easily reconfigured to new coalition partnerships and network connectivity. Making cross-domain security an integral aspect of the architecture from the outset is essential to the ultimate development of secure systems — information assurance cannot be an afterthought.

Several architectural approaches hold promise for securing the Net Centric environment without making each and every software component security aware and obliged. The use of intelligent, just-in-time cross-domain appliances can provide multi-level information where its needed while ensuring information confidentiality, integrity, availability, and non-repudiation. An example of such an appliance is a secure Web/file server, built to allow interoperability across a wide range of security domains involving Commercial Off-the-Shelf (COTS) components. The concept developed within this server could be extended to support cross-domain chat, mail, and database access in a generic manner.
