| Information Elements are defined in the Department of Defense Architecture Framework (DoDAF) as "pieces of information." They are used to describe current information usage and information requirements for organizations, tasks, activities, systems, applications, facilities, and platforms. They also provide a basis for logical data models. Information Elements describe the information contents of the well known Information Exchange Requirement (IER). Information Elements are arranged in a composition taxonomy. Information Elements map to data elements. Thusly structured, Information Elements provide a powerful tool for many net centric data management tasks such as content management and authoritative data sources determination. For example, determining the task and activity requirements for information, in terms of content and attributes, can be used for authorization and security controls. This presentation describes the structure and role of Information Elements in the DoDAF and how they can play roles in several net-centric data management tasks. | |
