"Weapons System Operators – the Transition from “Instrument Virtuoso” to “Conductor”"

From Spear “chucking” to aerial combat in the skies over Vietnam, the successful warfighter was a master of his weapon in much the same way a virtuoso plays his instrument, either as a soloist or a member of a symphony. The operator was the combined interface and compensation device between the quirks, limitations, and capabilities of his weapon system, and the demise of his target. Today, the operator has at his disposal sensors, “fire and forget” weapons, safety lock-outs, built-in compensation devices for targeting, (significantly increasing his warfighting lethality), which he orchestrates, much like an orchestra conductor, to bring about the demise of his target.
An understanding of this evolution is important to those whose job it is to establish the operational requirements of new systems and the associated follow-on acquisition effort.
