Dr. Jim Kane is President and CEO of the Systems and Software Consortium, Inc. in Herndon, Virginia (formerly the Software Productivity Consortium). He is responsible for the overall direction and growth of SSCI and for the solutions it provides to its diverse membership. SSCI members include leading companies in the aerospace, defense, IT, financial, telecom, and electronic industries, as well as key government agencies and universities. SSCI enables its members to solve complex challenges on large, software-intensive, network-centric systems. SSCI is a world-class leader in the application of tools and processes to support software and systems engineering/design management, integration and mission assurance.

Kane is highly regarded for his strategic vision and for his ability to analyze and synthesize the impact of diverse technical, policy, and competitive forces. He is a frequent speaker at industry forums, investment analyst meetings, and in company boardrooms, and is regularly quoted in the business and technology press. Before joining SSCI in January 2004, Kane was President of Federal Sources Inc. (FSI), a leading market intelligence and consulting firm serving the federal information technology (IT) marketplace. At FSI, Kane established the company as the thought leader in federal IT.

During the 1990s Kane served in a variety of management and marketing positions at GTE. He was Vice President of Business Solutions for GTE Information Systems, responsible for telecommunications and networking solutions for both government and commercial clients, including NYSE’s Wireless Data System, the U.S. Department of State’s DOSTEC program, and the General Services Administration’s nationwide wireless communications program. As Director of Government Marketing at GTE Spacenet, he established the company as a leading provider of satellite communications for the Department of Defense and the National Weather Service.

An early veteran of the Internet, Kane served at Internet pioneer Bolt Beranek and Newman Inc. (BBN) from 1976 to 1990. He began his career at BBN doing research, consulting and expert testimony on the economic viability and impacts of advanced technologies. He developed computer networking pricing and financial models for BBN clients and becoming a key player in the company’s business development activities. Kane subsequently assumed business development responsibility for BBN’s distributed simulation business.

Kane has served as Assistant Secretary of Economic Affairs for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and Assistant Professor of Economics at the University of Massachusetts/Amherst. He holds his PhD from the University of Pittsburgh and his BS from LeMoyne College, Syracuse, New York.
