"DO-178C: A New Standard for Software Safety Certification"
Monday 26 April 3:30 PM - 4:15 PM
Track 1

This presentation provides an overview of the emerging DO-178C standard, a revision to the current DO-178B standard for safety certification of commercial avionics systems. DO-178B has been in use since the early 1990s and is being updated to reflect technology developments since its inception. The revision effort started in early 2005 and is currently reaching conclusion. It is a joint effort between the U.S. and Europe. Although military aircraft have historically not been subject to DO-178B certification, that situation is changing. For example, the possible deployment of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles in commercial airspace will entail compliance with FAA requirements including DO-178 certification. This presentation summarizes the status of DO-178C and describes the Terms of Reference serving as the basis of the revision; changes in the body of the DO-178B document; and technology supplements on issues affecting safety certification (Tool Qualification, Model-Based Design and Verification, Object-Oriented Technology, Formal Methods).
